Cast Iron Fireplace
Popular in the Victorian era, even in the smallest of houses, the cast iron fireplace was more of a necessity than anything else in those days, and while it is now considered an adornment of the highest order and something to treasure for the sake of originality, was as commonplace as the living flame gas fire is today!
If you live in a house that was built in or before the Victorian era you may be lucky enough to find a cast iron fireplace hidden behind plasterboard; it was common practice in the middle of the 20 th century to board up such features as they were not considered stylish in the modernist design of the 1950's, and many were simply boarded over and left as they were.
This is why a cast iron fireplace can often be uncovered and restored to its simplistic yet attractive former glory with little effort, and why you may be lucky and find one in your home. Look at the chimney breast areas in both upper and downstairs rooms – you can be sure that if there is no opening there now there will have been at some point, and lying behind that plasterboard may be a beautiful and original cast iron fireplace!
If you want to buy one there are many suppliers of new cast iron fireplaces, as well as architectural reclamation suppliers who take out old items and sell them on, and much information on where to find these can be discovered on the internet.
You need not commit to an open fire with a cast iron fireplace, either, as there are many modern retro look burners that would fit very well within the confines of a cast iron surround. Have a look now – you never know what may be lurking behind your walls!
